GLSnuteDay One of IEM São Paulo is in the books, with four players into the next round, and four let to enjoy the sun and think about what might have been. But the action has barely even begun, as Day Two kicks off tomorrow with an exciting card, including our very own Liquid`Ret. In the second group of the day, the Droning Dutchman will do battle against an all-zerg group with the hope to secure a bid for the world championships, and perhaps take home a little hardware from Brazil.
The whole tournament is zerg heavy, but Ret's group takes the cake for swarmy-goodness. The replacement of Peruvian terran Fenix with the Brazilian zerg DakkoN has made Group D an all-zerg contest. Everyone will need to sharpen their ZvZ in preparation for the contest ahead. Luckily, Ret's ZvZ has been looking pretty sharp. This is the best it's been since any time in Sc2. In the MLG EU qualifier, Ret beat fellow group member sLivko in convincing fashion, and took two games off of Empire|viOlet to assure at least the second seed. However, Ret did lose four more games against viOlet a while later, which means that he will need to focus on this group to avoid getting upset.
But overall, despite this being a group of very good ZvZ players, Ret's recent form has been stellar, and not just against zerg. If he advances from his group, his next opponent could be of any race, but Ret will be confident against all of them. The most challenging opponent in the field, oGsSuperNoVa, is terran, Ret's favorite match-up. There is no doubt that Ret is among the favorites for this event, and perhaps the most plausible of the not-SuperNoVa candidates. Whether he can deliver remains to be seen, but we'll start to answer that question tomorrow.
