In the inaugural season of the ESET UK Masters tournament, Team Liquid's Jens "Snute" Aasgaard defeated Ju "Sting" Hoon of team Western Wolves by a score of 3 - 0 to take home the first place prize of £4,000. For Snute, the tournament signaled a return to form after he had been eliminated from the IEM World Championship just weeks earlier with a 0 - 5 record. Defeating skilled competitors such as Denmark's FXOBabyKnight and Germany's mouz.HasuObs on his way to the finals, Snute reaffirmed the skills that saw him rise rapidly through Europe's ranks in the latter half of 2012.
Sting, in his second international appearance following his championship at the previous year's IEM Singapore, earned another top finish for the rising European team Western Wolves. Sting had an impressive run through the elimination bracket, scoring 3 - 0 victories over AX.Crank, Liquid`Ret, and mouz.HeRoMaRinE. However, Sting had the tables turned on him in the finals, as Snute was easily able to contain his aggressive play and had firm control over the games in a 3 - 0 sweep.
The other stars of the tournament were Europe's youngsters. Having been touted as a bright prospect for some time but with no results to show for it, the fifteen year old HeRoMaRinE achieved his first major success with a third place finish. HeRoMaRinE started off strong, going 5 - 0 in the group stage. In the quarter-final round, he faced off against JonnyRecco, the seventeen year old Zerg player who had broken out in the previous year. HeRoMaRinE emerged victorious after a tight 3 - 2 series, and was left to continue the youth movement alone. While he was heavily outmatched in a semi-final loss to Sting, HeRoMaRinE made up for it by defeating former European representative BabyKnight 3 - 1 in the third/fourth place matches.
