From DoubleLift to Double J's: CoreJJ joins TL

November 20 2018

“I saw the potential of winning another World championship in this team, and as part of this team I am going to try my best to win everything”

It’s been a long journey to the top for CoreJJ. Growing from his humble beginnings at the bottom of the LCK into one of the few warriors mighty enough to have slain the Demon King himself, thus ending his reign. Despite winning the greatest prize of all, there is one thing that has eluded his grasp thus far: a domestic championship.

He’s come to the right place.

This isn’t CoreJJ’s first year in the NA LCS, but he thinks it’s shaping up to be his most successful. Our newest member seems to agree that his addition to our roster was a no brainer. After all, who could say no to having not one, but two highly skilled World Champions on their team? Yes, CoreJJ has already quite literally left his mark on League of Legends forever. But one skin is not enough. He’s hungry for much, much more. More trophies, more skins, more everything.

His ultimate goal? To once again lift the Summoner’s Cup. And CoreJJ believes Team Liquid is the best place to do that.

So the number one thing everyone will be curious about is, of course, why did you decide to come back to NA?

The three years I played in Gen.G were very valuable and memorable, but after an unsuccessful run at Worlds this year I wanted to put myself in a position to improve and challenge myself. I looked around the world for the team that wanted me, and I believed that being in NA with Team Liquid will enable me to head towards the next step.

Especially considering the West’s performance at Worlds this year, do you think that the gap has finally closed? If so, do you think this is because Western teams are getting better overall?

I believe all regions are similar in terms of skill level. I think the smallest differences can be the factor that allows one region to win over another.

What are some of your goals while on Team Liquid? Both for the team and for yourself individually. (Besides just the usual “winning Worlds”)

Of course winning the World championship is the ultimate goal for the team, but I want to perform really well and be remembered for a long time by the fans as well.

Do you feel any pressure coming back to NA now that you’re a World Champion? How does this affect you as a player? Do you think its right for fans to expect more from previous World Champions?

There is always expectation and pressure coming back as the world champion but, like always, I will enjoy the pressure!

Do you think having 2 World Champions increases TL’s chances of doing well internationally? Or do you think the number of Champs on a team is irrelevant? Basically, are individual skill and team play more important to success than experience on the highest stage of them all?

I believe having the experience of being a world champion is very valuable. But when the new season starts, I think it’s important to be humble and have the mindset of a rookie while also maintaining that experience as a world champion.

Jensen mentioned in his interview that there will be a learning curve with this roster, as there always is with a new team. Despite having played in the NA LCS before, how hard do you think the transition back will be? What, if any, advice do you have for yourself and any players moving to another region?

The new roster for Team Liquid has players with good skill and long lasting careers. Of course everyone will have their own thoughts and it will be different at first, but I think it’s important for everyone to learn from each other and create good teamwork. The most important thing when going to another region is to maintain a comfortable atmosphere while also making sure you are approachable to your teammates.

You previously played ADC before transitioning to support. Based on your experience in both positions, how would you rate Doublelift as an ADC, and how what type of supportive play do you think will unleash him?

Doublelift is the main reason behind my decision to join Team Liquid. I know for a fact that Doublelift is a good player as he always attends Worlds, and I believe we can both improve together by having a good relationship.

Earlier this year Team Liquid had the opportunity to visit the GenG facility in Korea. How do you think it compares to the AWTF?

I had a glimpse of the AWTF in a video, but I cannot remember it all that well. That being said, I believe Team Liquid provided the best for their players and I am excited to start working in AWTF!

Was there anything in particular you missed about living in California? Is there anything you’re looking forward to having access to now that you’re moving back? What will you miss the most about Korea?

I missed Californian pho the most while in Korea. I was able to have some good pho in 2016 while I was in NA for that year’s World championship, but now that I’m moving back to California I am excited to have even more good pho! I will miss the people I’m leaving behind the most. Specifically my girlfriend, family, and my fans.

Have you watched any episodes of SQUAD? Have you previously interacted with any of your new teammates? How do you think you will fit into the team’s atmosphere?

I watched SQUAD while I was in Korea because it was entertaining. I had a good time hanging out with Liquid’s players during Worlds this year, I really enjoy eating chinese hot pot together with them, and they even recommended a good place in Busan to me. They really left a good impression on me. I generally enjoy having conversations with people, so I want to have good conversations with my teammates, without useless arguments, and have a productive atmosphere within the team.
